Autosound 2000 Test Lab Review of the Valor DTS605W Double-DIN
CD, DVD Player with AM/FM/TV Tuner and 6.5" TFT Monitor
By David Navone, Richard Clark, and Brian Smith
We are certainly excited about Valors new DTS605W in-dash player. This state-of-the-art double-DIN chassis features a narrow built-in DVD player mounted just behind the mechanized color display. This complex deck also controls an accessory changer that handles virtually any disc format including: CDDA, VCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW, MP3, WMA, and .jpg files as well!
There are five built in power amplifiers and we measured a healthy undistorted 18 Watts per channel into 4 Ohm reactive loads. (The factory rating is 45 Watts per 5 Channels). During our power tests, the speaker level frequency response was flat to within -2 dB from 20 Hz all the way to 20 kHz. This is rare for a deck with so many features and benefits. We measured the A weighted Signal to Noise ratio at ?92 dB ---- Quite a good spec for such a complex source.
Pre-Amp Level Tests
The pre-amp level output impedance was a very respectable 570 Ohms which means that the DDA650W is capable of driving many power amplifiers without picking up noise from the cars electrical systems. The maximum useable pre-amp output level was recorded at 2.8 Volts rms, and again was flat to better than -2 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The useable Dynamic Range was 96 dB ? an excellent specification for a high quality product.
Multiple Sources
The DTS605W ranks at the top of our list for multiple sources in a single component. This unit contains an AM/FM radio tuner, a built-in DVD player, an accessory changer capable of handling CDs, DVDs, VCDs, etc., a rear view or video camera input, and an AUX input for IPODs and other MP3 players. Our test results were identical with all of these sources.
Color Monitor
The 6.5" Grade A monitor is fully motorized and ran smoothly during our tests. We cycled the mechanism on and off over a period of three days without incident. We were impressed with the mechanisms overload circuitry which automatically prevents the unit from self-destructing when it encounters an obstacle. This is important with kids, pets, and unforeseen abuse during operation. Although there are four different video aspect ratios (Off, Full, Wide, and Normal), the default settings on both the monitor and DVD player were more than adequate. On some players its difficult to get the DVD to play without making lots of menu selections? ditto for some displays. Adjusting the viewing angle is straightforward and the internal memory holds the last position.
Remote Controls and Joy Stick
The DTS605W comes with two completely independent credit card sized IR remote control units. One remote is for the controlling the front zone and the other remote controls the rear zone. The remotes are super thin and incredibly detailed. For instance, everything from the viewing angle to the set-up menus can be quickly accessed via either of the remotes. Also included is a five-way joystick control. This control is positioned on the lower left side of the monitor and is a great way to navigate through the many menus. Rather than scroll through menus to change sources, there are hard keys just to the left of the monitor. This means that swapping between viewing a DVD movie.
Other Features
With the changer added to the system, the DTS605W becomes a changer controller. The bottom row of buttons handles the changer functions which include shuttle, repeat, play, stop, etc. The Mute button is located conveniently just under the Joystick on the lower left corner? and the Pause button is in the lower right corner. We operated the DTS605W on both the remote control and without the remote control. Although its easier to navigate through the menus with the remote, it can also be accomplished from the front panel controls.
Summary
The DTS605W is an extremely versatile component with very respectable specifications. We found the quality of the circuitry, as well as the mechanism, to be first class. The motorized display was vivid and operated smoothly. We were also impressed with the ease of operation for such a complex deck. Even though the owners manual was well organized and written, it was not required to get the deck up and running. Our congratulations to Valor for a great in-dash player.
Respectfully,
David Navone
